Now I Can Achieve My Goals
Brazil. Eliana Santos – I’m a nurse who graduated from the University of São Paulo (USP), and I specialize in mental health. I work in hard-to-reach places with the street population and crack users. In Brazil, despite so many issues, many vulnerable people still receive improvement action and help from the government. When I visited the Hulene B Landfill in Mozambique, I realized that there is nothing there and at the same time there is everything.
The women have no choice but to collect material for recycling in order to earn a few coins to support themselves. When I learned about MBS, my vision of helping with self-sustainability grew, as I started to have more ideas than just cooking and handicraft classes in the manufacture of green papaya soap, or even cassava, which are products in great quantity in the area. The MBS had a huge impact on me and I discovered that I could go further and take these strong women who carry kilos of plastic on their heads to earn a few coins, but can work with their hands making bread, cakes and soap and earn an income without suffering. MBS also allowed me to look at my personal management, at how to organize myself. For example, I deserve a new car because the one I have has been broken in the garage for two months! With management, I know I’ll be able to achieve many other things. It has opened up my vision to understand where I spend and why I spend. My immense thanks to MBS, especially Director Cynthya, Support Elias and Co-founder Dean Curtis.
